HANGING ON THE PAST brings together 40 video stills from films and television series I grew up with, all centred on the idea of the “one great love.” Watching these stories as a teenager shaped my expectations of romantic relationships. Most of their narratives are deeply patriarchal. Women are repeatedly presented as inadequate and expected to transform themselves in order to become desirable, while men retain the power to choose and decide. The work examines how growing up with such images influences what we expect from love and how we understand our own value within relationships.
