EXHIBITION CONCEPT

What remains of experiences we have lived through ourselves, absorbed from others, or only heard about? freeze : MEMORY looks at memory as something personal that is also shaped by family, society, and the images we grow up with. The exhibition asks what is passed on, what becomes embedded in the body, and which experiences women share across generations and different realities of life.

With freeze : MEMORY, GRUPPE GORGONE e. V. continues its series exploring the bodily responses fight, flight, freeze. Following fight or flight (Berlin, 2024–2026), the focus now turns to freezing, preserving, and what continues to resonate. Together with SCÂNTEIA PROJECTS and CALCIU SPACE, the exhibition brings together three artistic positions from Berlin and Bucharest in a former press house in Bucharest, a place that raises questions of archives, public discourse, and historical imprint.

The works of CĂTĂLINA UNGUREANU, DENISE LOBONȚ, and FINJA SANDER begin with very concrete experiences. Fears passed down by a grandmother. Apartments and objects in which personal histories accumulate. A friend holding another friend’s hair while she vomits. Personal memories meet ideas of femininity and care, and the ways women perceive themselves and one another.

CĂTĂLINA UNGUREANU explores childhood fears in Circulation that emerged from stories and warnings told by her grandmother. Seemingly harmless things such as laundry detergent or rubber bands became associated with the threat of immediate danger. Today, she places these objects in absurd situations, returning to fears that have long since lost their original power yet continue to leave traces.

In Safe Space (2025–ongoing), DENISE LOBONȚ locates memory in bodies, homes, and everyday objects. She photographs older women in Bucharest with pink-dyed hair, personal living spaces, and garden fences painted by her grandmother. Memories of communist Romania meet contemporary ideas of femininity and the search for places in which women can create their own forms of freedom.

FINJA SANDER works with memories held in the body and in familiar gestures. In Backyard Reunion from the series Twenty Something Girls, a longtime friend holds her hair while she vomits. It is an intimate situation familiar to many women, situated between loss of control and care. Sander connects it to a scene from Sex and the City. Personal memory and pop culture come together in an image that many recognise without having lived through the same story.

freeze : MEMORY brings these different forms of remembering together. A fear can pass from one generation to the next. An apartment can tell the story of a past life. A physical gesture can be both private and collective. What belongs to us alone? What have we inherited? And what do we recognise in the memories of others?
